Rolling Steel Garage Door Lab
Interactive Engineering Explorer — by A+ Garage Doors
Rolling steel doors are the backbone of commercial construction. From warehouse loading docks to fire-rated walls to retail storefronts, these doors handle extreme loads, high-cycle operation, and harsh environments — and most people have never seen what’s happening inside one.
We built this interactive lab to break down the engineering behind rolling steel doors — how the coiling mechanism works, why slat profiles matter, and where these doors show up in the real world.
What’s Inside
- Rolling Door Anatomy — Explore every component: curtain, barrel, guides, bottom bar, hood, and counterbalance spring. Switch between a full cross-section view, a zoomed slat interlock detail, and a barrel cutaway.
- Coiling Mechanism — Open and close the door in real time. Watch the slats coil around the barrel as live readouts track door position, spring tension, coil wraps, and operation status.
- Slat Profiles — Compare five slat types side by side: flat, curved, insulated, perforated, and grille. See R-values, wind ratings, and visibility specs for each.
- Rolling Steel vs. Sectional — A head-to-head comparison covering opening size, ceiling space, security, insulation, cycle life, fire rating, wind load, repairability, and cost.
- Applications — Five interactive scenes showing rolling steel doors in context: warehouse, fire-rated, security grille, counter shutter, and self-storage.
Use the buttons to switch views and control the door. Works on desktop and mobile.
Why Rolling Steel?
Rolling steel doors coil around a barrel above the opening rather than ride along ceiling tracks. That means they need almost zero backroom depth — a critical advantage in buildings where every square foot of ceiling and floor space matters.
They also outperform sectional doors in cycle life (500,000+ cycles vs. 10,000–50,000), security (interlocking steel slats vs. hinged panels), and fire rating (up to 4 hours—sectional doors typically aren’t fire-rated at all).
The trade-off? They’re louder, more industrial-looking, and cost more. For commercial and industrial applications, the engineering advantages are worth it.
